Lake Drawing Wind op Bewegter Wind festival

Performance at Lake Ruthven, for Hica and Arts Catalyst
Arts Catalist (London, UK) commissioned the original performance that was executed in 2010 in the context of a PolakVanBekkum solo show at HICA.

Intro

We have been selected for the 12th “bewegter wind”  art festival with a 3-minute version of our 2011 GPS-work “Lake Drawing Wind“. The Festival will take place from 17 to 31 August 2025 in Zierenberg, Northern Hesse, Germany.

The international wind art festival takes place as a competition every two years at different locations in the region.

We released five helium balloons from a rowing boat during our performance to float in the wind over the lake. A lightweight GPS logger was attached to each balloon.
Custom software visualized the collected GPS tracks in Google Earth from the viewpoints of the balloons. Resulting in 5 films, each with a different colored balloon as the protagonist. The balloons leave traces in the air, like footsteps, or rather wind steps, as they reveal the history of the wind currents.
The work allows the audience to identify with each balloon. The work was the first exploration of actual time visualization based on location data.
